India is a developing country with a very large population. It has its own inherent problem like poverty, shortage, ignorance and because of this; a large population is deprived of proper medical care and has to go without it. India has also world’s largest population of blind and visually handicapped and they lead a life of blindness, misery and deprivation. But most of these causes are preventable and treatable and vision makes a difference in their quality of life considerably, with this aim H. V. Desai Eye Hospital is providing Quality eye care with outreach to poor & needy since 8 yrs.

H.V. Desai Eye Hospital is located at Hadapsar, Pune. The hospital is totally dedicated to give good quality eye care service, free or at an affordable cost especially for poor, rural and deprived lot. This is a ISO 9000--2001 certified hospital, with dedicated and highly skilled and qualified ophthalmic surgeons and supporting staff. This hospital is having 200 beds and 3 operation theater complexes having facility to operate 16 patients simultaneously. We have all super specialty facilities, equipped with state of art technology and modern equipments, to provide comprehensive eye care to patients who otherwise can’t afford.

Cataract is one major cause of blindness which is treatable and makes a huge difference in a quality of life. We regularly conduct camps at far and remote locations, transport them and operate without spending any money. Since our inception of hospital in January 2000, we are conducting around 22000 - 24000 cataract surgeries per year. But even this large number is a small drop in the ocean of this gigantic problem.

India has largest population of diabetics and diabetes affects all systems of body and also causes blindness and this problem is going to increase substantially in time to come. This diabetic retinopathy is preventable and treatable, but what needs is be done, is regular survey of population for detection and treatment. We at H.V.Desai eye hospital have undertaken a project in partnership with ORBIS International organization working in the field of eye care. We have specialist ophthalmologist and equipments to do this.

Children are our future and no society can afford to neglect them. Their eye problems and blindness needs to tackled differently, we have a pediatric ophthalmology department with pediatric ophthalmic surgeons, specialized equipments and since march 2004. we provide treatment to childrens in giving them their vision and rightful place in the society. We also conduct teachers training programme to help them to locate children with eye problems.

Large numbers of people become blind due to corneal causes like malnutrition, infection, injuries etc and many of them are quite young. This is an entirely treatable problem. India needs 2000000 number of corneas and we get only 20000.Thus large number of corneal blind go without treatment .The eye donation campaign needs massive public education and publicity for eye donation .H.V.Desai Eye Hospital has started eye bank on 2 October 05 and sine then, we collect cornea and performes corneal transplants, giving them not only vision but a new life. Happiness on the face of a small girl after she sees the world after surgery is an unforgettable sight.

The plight of tribal and those staying in remote areas is still worse. We have started a 50 bedded and well equipped eye hospital at Nandurbar to serve tribal population in a short time we are able to reach large section of community and serve them, but still lot more remains to be done.

Despite this we have also provision of giving treatment to affluent class in a special area with newer and modern technique of surgery at reasonable cost.

There are number of problems which can be tackled by a joint effort by various sections. Your organizations involved in lot of activities to help under privileged and deprived. We wish to join hands with you and work together and bring life and light in those eyes.
