PBMA’S H.V. Desai Eye Hospital organized the 5th Eye India conference on Community Ophthalmology Advances in Comprehensive Eye Care Management on 8th & 9th May. The conference was inaugurated by General D. P. Vats commandant Armed Forces Medical College. About 150 ophthalmologists attended the conference.

During this conference Padmashri Dr. T.P. Lahane, Prof. Dr. Ragini Parikh, Dr. Jeevan Ladi, Dr. Anis and Dr. Vasant Kumar gave live surgical demonstration on advanced cataract surgery Phacoemulsifiaction with foldable lens implantation. Dr. Seema Jagadale Cornea Specialist demonstrated sutureless, Pterygium surgery. Dr. Rahul Deshpande demonstrated advanced techniques of Ptosis surgery.

This conference was largely attended by Ophthalmologist from all over country.
Various scientific sessions were organized in which new emerging causes of Blindness like diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma were discussed by experts.
In the session on childhood eye problems like retinopathy of Prematurity, Squint, Nystagmous. Dr.Sucheta Kulkarni gave on management of retinopathy of prematurity , Dr. Nikhil Rishikeshi gave talk on yet another tricky problem Nystagmus surgery which he is performing at H.V. Desai Eye Hospital. Practice management forms an important component of modern day health care. This session highlighted various aspects other than clinical eye care like Medicolegal aspects of eye care, causes of blindness. It was chaired by Dr. (Col.) Madan Deshpande Chief Medical Director H.V. Desai Hospital.
The chief guest highlighted role of stress management in day to day life Mr. Nitinbhai Desai Chairman of H.V. Desai Eye Hospital welcomed all the guest and Mr. N. P. Pandya President of H.V. Desai Eye Hospital explained the progress and future goals of H.V. Desai Eye Hospital. This conference was held in association with Maharashtra Ophthalmology Association and Poona Ophthalmology Association under the guidance of Dr. (Col.) Madan Deshpande chief Medical Director H.V. Desai Eye Hospital.

The Rural Eye Bank Workshop to promote the eye donation in rural area was held on 22nd November 2009. The concept to reach out to rural area was thought of for the first time by Col. M. Deshpande, Chief Medical Director, H. V. Desai Eye Hospital and Mr. N. P. Pandya, President of PBMA, Pune. After contacting willing people in different areas we invited a group of social worker, eye surgeons and general practitioners from Beed, Narayangaon, Sangamner, Malegaon, Nevasa, Nandurbar, Udgir, Usmanabad, and Pune District. Almost 20 people attended the workshop. Dr. Seema Jagdale, Dr. Shilpa Joshi, Dr. Pranav More and Mr. Satish Kurpad conducted scientific workshop and gave practical demonstration. The delegates also performed corneal scleral rim removal on preserved eye balls in wet lab session. They were recruited in H. V. Desai Eye Hospital eye bank and were issued kits containing storage media, instruments and thermos needed for donor tissue preservation.
There is need for 3 lakh eye balls per year we only collect 30,000 in our country. Dr. Harish Saxsena stressed the need, Mr. Kumarbhai Shah and Dr. Raut from Narayangaon participated in this workshop. A success of such workshop would be held in future to promote rural awareness and getting eye donations.

Miss Ng Kwan Yue Sandra a famous celebrity from Hong Kong visiting to Pune’s H.V. Desai Eye Hospital. She is ORBIS Kids Sight ambassador. She is known for “Comic roles” where she often pokes fun at her plain look. In a career spanning over 20yrs she has filmed over 100 movies and many T.V. shows. She has received best actress award at Golden Horse Film Festival in Taiwan in 2006.
She will be visiting H.V. Desai Eye Hospital between 10 to 12th April 2010. She will observe live eye surgeries done on paediatric patients. She will inaugurate retinoblastoma clinic (Paediatric Eye Cancer Unit) at H. V. Desai Eye Hospital and she will also visit homes of children who underwent surgeries at H.V. Desai Eye Hospital in the past. She will be accompanied by team members of ORBIS Hong Kong and ORBIS India.

Awarded to H. V. Desai Eye Hospital by Community Ophthalmology Society of India (COSI) on 27 Nov 2009 at Bikaner.

H. V. Desai Eye Hospital will launch an Advance Software- Tele-Ophthalmology on 14th September 2010. Which will help in advance screening of ROP by taking images of the retina. These images can be sent to the ophthalmologist concerned on his iphone via internet.
