On 25th January 2009 a workshop on Diabetes & Diabetic Retinopathy Emerging Problem was organized by Indian Medical Association, Pune branch and H. V. Desai Eye Hospital, Dr. Nitu Mandke IMA House, Tilak Road, Pune. Total 100 Doctors attended the workshop.
Dr. C. S. Yajnik, Director, KEM Hospital, Diabetes unit, gave information about Diabetes Management & prevention of Micro Vascular complication. Col. Dr. Madan Deshpande, Chief Medical Director, H. V. Desai Eye Hospital, talked about H.V. Desai Eye Hospital and its partnership with IMA to tackle emerging problem of Diabetes and its complications. Dr. Sucheta Kulkarni, Deputy Director & HOD of Retina Department, H. V. Deasai Eye Hospital, made presentation on Diabetic Retinopathy and Dr. Kuldeep Dole, Deputy Director, H. V. Desai Eye Hospital provided information regarding Diabetic Retinopathy project started at H. V. Desai and appealed all the members of IMA to participate by helping to arrange Diabetes detection and Diabetic Retinopathy screening camps and referring the patients with Diabetes Mellitus to H. V. Desai for screening Diabetic Retinopathy.
In an attempt to ascertain incidence of diabetes retinopathy in the Pune city and prevent its further growth, the Indian medical association (IMA), Pune branch, H. V. Desai eye Hospital and the diabetes unit from KEM hospital have decided to form a chain of Diabetes Retinopathy Clinics (DRCs) all over the city. The aim is to diagnose patients at an early stage and make them aware of this progressive blindness.
In these clinics, diabetes patients would be screened for diabetes retinopathy and related complications. The patients suffering from eye problems would be examined further by a team of eye specialists and would be followed up for treatment thereafter.

The DNB mock examination course was held on 8th March’2009, under the aegis of Academic and Research Committee of AIOS, at the H.V.Desai eye hospital, Pune. 32 exam. Going students and 30-40 non exam going students registered for DNB attended the course

The Rural Eye Bank Workshop to promote the eye donation in rural area was held on 22nd November 2009. The concept to reach out to rural area was thought of for the first time by Col. M. Deshpande, Chief Medical Director, H. V. Desai Eye Hospital and Mr. N. P. Pandya, President of PBMA, Pune. After contacting willing people in different areas we invited a group of social worker, eye surgeons and general practitioners from Beed, Narayangaon, Sangamner, Malegaon, Nevasa, Nandurbar, Udgir, Usmanabad, and Pune District. Almost 20 people attended the workshop. Dr. Seema Jagdale, Dr. Shilpa Joshi, Dr. Pranav More and Mr. Satish Kurpad conducted scientific workshop and gave practical demonstration. The delegates also performed corneal scleral rim removal on preserved eye balls in wet lab session. They were recruited in H. V. Desai Eye Hospital eye bank and were issued kits containing storage media, instruments and thermos needed for donor tissue preservation.
There is need for 3 lakh eye balls per year we only collect 30,000 in our country. Dr. Harish Saxsena stressed the need, Mr. Kumarbhai Shah and Dr. Raut from Narayangaon participated in this workshop. A success of such workshop would be held in future to promote rural awareness and getting eye donations.

Pharmaceutical Industry has laye amount of resource for research. There is acute scarcity of research workers and mid level staff. Keeping this in mind for the first time Pune University has out sourced this Clinical Research and Clinical Data Management course. So far 6th batch have completed and have been well placed in market. For this new batch opening ceremony was conducted 1st August 2009. It was prescribed over by Jaintibhai Trivedi a famous pharmaceutical Industry Director. Who has won National award. He explained the importance of this valuable course and opportunities training for the market. Mr. N. P. Pandya, Dr. Rahul Deshpande, Kishorbahi Vora and Sharvari Shukla were present also with old and new batch students. Hema Kale coordinator organized the programme.
