1. Save your Sight (Diabetic Retinopathy):
Globally Diabetic Retinopathy is the leading cause of vision loss in adults of working age (20-65 years). It is estimated that globally every 10 seconds 2 people develop diabetes and 1 person dies because of diabetes related causes. More than 2.5 million people worldwide are affected by diabetic retinopathy, a potential blinding disease. Unfortunately Indian houses the highest number of diabetic patients of the world.
Hence in order to prevent blindness due to Diabetic Retinopathy in India; community eye care programmes should be able to attract and examine persons with Diabetes. This will require that persons with diabetes and the need for regular eye examinations. Appropriate eye health information, education and communication may encourage people at risk to seek timely and appropriate care.
In the above context, an awareness creation campaign, “Save Your Sight”, has been conceptualized to increase awareness and knowledge for early detection of diabetic eye diseases so as to prevent visual loss.
In this community participation is extremely important. Also involvement of other stakeholders like medical, paramedical personnel involved in management of diabetes will make this program successful. So we appeal to you to participate in this initiative by:
1. Helping us arrange diabetes detection and diabetic retinopathy screening camps.
2. Arranging awareness creation meetings.
3. If you are physician then refer patients with diabetes mellitus to H. V. Desai Eye Hospital for screening diabetic retinopathy.

2. ROP Project ( Retinopathy of Prematurity):
Retinopathy of prematurity isa disease peculiar to preterm babies. It is primarily a disease of retinal blood vessels and if left untreated can lead to irreversible blindness.

ROP is particularly significant in India an contest because, now a days due to modern medical care, smaller and smaller babies are surviving. hence the risk of ROP related blindness.

Low awareness about ROP in neonatologists and ophthalmologists is another issue. There are no established ROP screening programs in India & there is lack of trained manpower to take care of ROP in preterm babies.

H. V. Desai Eye Hopsital in collaboration with Sight Savers International (a UK based INGO) started this "ROP Project" in Pune and other 5 districts of Western Maharashtra.Sight Savers International was gracious enough to donate "Retcam" with is portable digital Camera.
