PBMA's LION's Juhu Community Ophthalmology

The H. V. Desai Eye Hospital in partenership with Lions Juhu started the Lion's Juhu Community Ophthalmology Institute on 6th September 2008. The aim is to contri bute to the prevention of blindness through service delivery, teaching, training, consultancy, advocacy and research in eye care delivery.

It is a well known fact that one person in world goes blind every five second and a child goes blind every minute. Out of 52 million blind globally, our country has: million blind. This would reach 12-14 million by year 2020 if present day pace of activities continue, The fortunate part is almost 8:% of blindness is avoidable.

PBMA'S H. V Desai Eye Hospital, with its committed strategy to reach out to reduce the avoidable blindness and dedicated efforts has emerged as a high quality high volume center in the western region of the nation. The hospital believes in the practice of community ophthalmology and works as per the principles of ''VISION ,2020 - Right to sight, India” an initiative to eliminate avoidable blindness.

The stream / thought of community ophthalmology is not contained only in hospital practice, but extends to improve the eye health through preventives primitive, curative and rehabilitation approaches there by giving a holistic view of eye health with active community participation at grass root.

The Lion's Club of Juhu has realized the importance of establishing a community ophthalmology centre to promote and facilitate work out strategies to educate paramedical staff and also conducting of operational research in the field of patient satisfaction, impact assessment and developing good quality, cost effective packages for the poor.

The Lion's Juhu has gracioulsy donated one bus in memory of Shri Kanmal and Shrimati Sita devi Jajoo for effective reach out programme

Activities

Increase awareness about blindness by regular awareness campaign and social marketing.
• Disease control by effective outreach (diagnostic camps)
• Train ophthalmologists/ para medics and eye care management professionals by short courses and symposia.
• Improve infrastructure in rural areas by establishing vision centers.
• Develop appropriate technology to reduce cost and increase efficiency.
• To undertake clinical, epidemiological and operational research so as to generate evidence in the practice of ophthalmology. AII the research, presentations done from this institute will hence forth will be acknowledged to Lion's Juhu Community Ophthalmolgy Institute.
• To monitor quality by conducting regular audits of the services and to assess the impact of the various interventions.
• To provide management consultants to other eye care institutions.
