Case Study of Nayan Sudam

Nayan Sudam Joshi, 8 months baby-boy resides in a small village Dapodi in Taluka Daund in Pune District. The village is situated around 75 Km from the Hospital. His parents gave history that their son is not able to recognize them since birth. They also noted that the child has white dots in his both eyes. They waited for five months in hope that those dots will disappear and the child will be able to see them. After months of agonizing wait they took the baby to a local general practitioner who asked them to get their baby’s eyes checked at H.V. Desai Eye Hospital.

Nayan was brought by his parents in H.V. Desai Eye Hospital on 19th April 2004. After examination by Ophthalmologist at HVDEH, it was recognized that the child has congenital Cataract in both the eyes. Parents were given assurance by Ophthalmologist that after successful surgeries on both the eyes under general Anaesthesia their baby will be able to see. They were told about the cost of the surgery, but as financial position of the parents was not good they were promise of concession was given in the surgical charges. The parents were very anxious about surgery under general Anaesthesia on the small baby. Their anxiety was relived to some extent when Paediatric counseller who is trained at Arvind Eye Hospital counseled them.

 

On 4th of May 2004, both eye of the child were operated under General Anaesthesia. Both eyes were operated in one sitting keeping in mind, the risk giving General Anaesthesia twice and chances of developing Amblyopia due to delay in surgery. Immediately after the surgery, on the next day the child was given glasses and was prescribed eye medicine.

Parents brought him for post-operative eye examination on 12th May 2004. On that day they were very happy as their child was looking at their faces and also trying to catch objects held in front of him. They exclaimed that it is our good fortune that we came to H. V. Desai Eye Hospital, which is helping in saving the sights of Children without any financial gain. They were also very thankful towards the Hospital staff and services.
