Case Study of Shantanu Chormale

Shantanu Havasrao Chormale, is a 2 years old male child born in a Nigdi a suburban of Pune city. The family is from Eet village in Usmanabad District, which is a rural part drought prone backward area of Maharashtra. Shantanus parents migrated to Pune in search of job. They belong to poor socioeconomic strata. His Father is working as a construction worker, and earns 80 rupees a day, which is not sufficient for daily expenses of the family. The work is also not regular. Because Shantanu is small his mother could not work.
In the month of October 2004 they went to their village for Diwali festival. Everything was going on normally. They all were enjoying days with their relatives. Suddenly a sad movement came in their life. One day early in the morning Shantanu woke up with loud cry. Parents didn't understood what happened exactly. They woke up and looked after Shantanu. They got shocked. They found that Shantanu’s right eye has swelled and came out. They could not understand what happened exactly. They took him to the Hospital at Beed District, which is 70 -80 K.m. from the village where Dr. Unalkar, a private practitioner treated him with some medicines. But there was no change in Shanatanu’s condition. The cost treatment was Rs.1500
Shantanu’s parents found that there are no proper medical facilities available in the District. So they came back to Pune and went to one privet Doctor at Nigdi, there he took 700 rupees for treatment and asked them to go to Lions Club of Poona, Mukundnagar Charitable Trust; for C.T. Scan evaluation. They went there and spend 2500 rupees for CT scan.
Shantanu’s parents were very disappointed because they were borrowing money from somebody and spending on his treatment but there was no change in Shantanu’s eye. Then on 13th November they went to the Yeshvantrao Chavan Municipal Hospital in Pune. Doctors found that Shantanu has a Brain Cancer (Glioma) and with the permission of the parents on 7th Nov they performed Brain Surgery in which part of brain along with roof of orbit (the bony cavity in which eye ball is present) was removed the cost of the surgery wasRs.5000. But the eye problem remained the same. Parents didn't understand what was happening exactly.
In Yeshvantrao Chavan Municipal Hospital one of the doctor told them about the H. V. Desai Eye Hospital. So they came to the H. V. Desai Eye Hospital Pediatric Eye Care Center. Mr. Sudhir Taras, Optometrist did the eye evaluation and found that it is a case of Retinoblastoma. Then Ophthalmologist advised them removal of the affected eyeball along with all the coverings of the eye ball (exentaration) to prevent spread of this cancerous growth so that his life could be saved. Parents were ready but now there was no money to spend with them. They have told their whole story to Cap.Bhagwan Kshirsagar, Pediatric Councilor. Pediatric Councilor told them about the how H. V. Desai Eye Hospital help children in eye care services. He asked parents that H. V. Desai Eye Hospital will do surgery free of cost. And also given idea about the type of surgery and anesthesia.
On 29th January 05 H. V. Desai Eye Hospital Pediatric Center our doctor took training under Dr. Devis Laws in HBP, performed the surgery on Shantanu’s right eye under anesthesia. It was very difficult to give anesthesia because in earlier brain surgery the skull roof of orbit removed. In the surgery he removed Shantanus right eye, which was fully damaged because of Retinoblastoma (Eye Cancer).
Surgery was done free of cost. Food & accommodation was also given free of cost.
