Department of Cornea

Department of Cornea has been existing in H. V. Desai Eye Hospital since 2003. The department is managed by 3 Cornea consultants –
Dr. Shilpa Joshi (Fellow of LVPEI)
Dr. Seema Jagdale (Fellow of Shankara
Netralaya)
Dr. Pranav More (Fellow of Aravind Eye Hospital)
Each one of them has received specialized training (fellowships) in Cornea & External Diseases of the eye from renowned institutes.
The department is well equipped with investigative modalities like videokeratograph (V.K.G), specular microscope and slit lamp biomicroscope with camera facilities.
The department is routinely performing various corneal surgeries like penetrating keratoplasty (PK), lamellar keraoplasty (LK), amniotic membrane with limbal stem cell transplantation and pterygium surgery with autografts.
The department also has a well equipped and fully functional contact lens department which is managed by Mrs.Vidya Shriram. She regularly dispenses contact lenses for refractive errors, keratoconus patients (RGP lenses) and also cosmetic contact lenses for abnormal blind eyes.
The department is proficient in managing ocular trauma like chemical injuries, corneal tears and also in management of various infectious keratitis.
The future trends of expansion of the department include a corneal fellowship program, ex –vivo stem cell culture and refractive surgeries like LASIK / PRK.
