Paediatric Opthalomolgy and Squint department
Vision impairment in childhood has a dramatic impact not only on the social development of the child, but also on their learning capability and potential. Since some serious eye disorders produce no early warning symptoms, it becomes all the more necessary to know when to get your child evaluated by a qualified professional. Paediatric Ophthalmology services at H. V. Desai Eye Hospital are dedicated to provide comprehensive ophthalmic care to all children of age less than 16 years. Providing such care aims towards no child being left needlessly blind and those children with low vision should have equal rights and accessibility to all services to enable them to take an active role in society. The ophthalmic care in this department includes treatment for all types of childhood problems like
- Refractive error
- Amblyopia (Lazy eye)
- Paediatric cataract
- Paediatric squint
- Low vision
- Ocular trauma
Besides this, in collaboration with Retina department, this department takes an active part in screening and visually rehabilitating kids with Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).
With Glaucoma and Oculoplasty department, common childhood problems like paediatric glaucoma and oculoplasty disorders (nasolacrimal duct obstruction, ptosis, entropion, blepharophimosis etc.) are also treated here. The Strabismology services of this department also offers treatment to adult patients with complaints of double vision and squint.
This department examines and treats around 10000 patients annually including surgical treatment of around 2500 children per year.
