Eye Bank

At PBMA's H. V. Desai Eye Hospital, our Eye Bank plays a crucial role in restoring vision through corneal transplantation. We facilitate eye donation programs and provide corneal tissue for patients in need of vision-restoring procedures.

What Is an Eye Bank?

An eye bank is a facility that collects, evaluates, processes, and distributes donated eye tissue for corneal transplantation, research, and education. Our eye bank ensures that donated corneas are properly preserved and matched with recipients who need vision-restoring surgery.

Corneal Transplantation

Our Cornea Department performs various types of corneal transplant procedures, including:

  • Penetrating Keratoplasty (PK): Full-thickness corneal transplant
  • DALK & DSEK: Layer-specific keratoplasties for faster recovery
  • Keratoprosthesis: Artificial cornea implantation when donor tissue is not suitable

Eye Donation

Eye donation is a selfless act that can restore sight to individuals suffering from corneal blindness. Anyone can be an eye donor, regardless of age, blood type, or medical history. The donation process is simple and does not disfigure the donor.

Key points about eye donation:

  • Eyes must be donated within 6-8 hours after death
  • The entire process takes only 15-20 minutes
  • One donor can help restore vision for up to two people
  • Donation does not interfere with funeral arrangements

How to Donate Eyes

If you or a family member wishes to donate eyes, please contact our eye bank immediately. Our team will guide you through the process and ensure that the donation is handled with care and respect.

Impact of Eye Donation

Through our eye bank services and corneal transplantation program, we help restore vision to individuals who would otherwise remain blind. Each donation represents hope and the gift of sight for those in need.
