Glaucoma
At PBMA's H. V. Desai Eye Hospital, we offer comprehensive care for glaucoma—often called the "silent thief of sight." As one of the leading glaucoma centers in Pune, our specialists use advanced diagnostics and personalized treatment plans to protect your vision and prevent irreversible damage.
What Is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, usually due to elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). It often develops gradually and without symptoms, making regular eye exams essential. If left untreated, glaucoma can lead to permanent vision loss—starting with peripheral vision and progressing to central vision.
Who Is at Risk?
Glaucoma can affect anyone, but risk increases with:
- Age over 60
- Family history of glaucoma
- Diabetes or hypertension
- Long-term steroid use
- Eye injuries or surgeries
Symptoms to Watch For
- Gradual loss of peripheral vision
- Blurred or tunnel vision
- Halos around lights
- Eye pain or pressure
- Headaches, nausea, or vomiting (in acute cases)
A comprehensive dilated eye exam is the only reliable way to detect glaucoma early.
Types of Glaucoma We Treat
- Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma: Most common form; slow progression
- Angle-Closure Glaucoma: Sudden blockage of drainage; medical emergency
- Normal-Tension Glaucoma: Optic nerve damage despite normal IOP
- Congenital Glaucoma: Present at birth; requires early intervention
- Secondary Glaucoma: Caused by trauma, inflammation, or medications
Diagnostic Technology
We use:
- Tonometry: Measures intraocular pressure
- Visual Field Testing: Assesses peripheral vision loss
- Optic Nerve Imaging: Tracks nerve damage progression
- Gonioscopy & Pachymetry: Evaluates drainage angle and corneal thickness
Treatment Options
While glaucoma cannot be cured, it can be managed effectively:
- Eye Drops & Oral Medications: Lower IOP by reducing fluid or improving drainage
- Laser Therapy: Includes trabeculoplasty and iridotomy to enhance fluid outflow
- Surgical Procedures: Trabeculectomy, shunt implantation, or minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS)
Our specialists tailor treatment plans based on disease type, severity, and patient lifestyle.
