What Is Low Vision?
Low vision refers to a significant visual impairment that cannot be corrected with standard glasses, contact lenses, or surgery. A person is considered to have low vision if they experience:
- Best corrected visual acuity of 6/18 or worse, and/or
- Visual field of 10 degrees or less from the point of fixation
- Difficulty recognizing faces beyond 3 meters (10 feet)
- Side vision loss or glare sensitivity
Low vision may result from central vision loss, peripheral field defects, reduced contrast sensitivity, or poor light adaptation.
